Lightshot alternatives
Lightshot's own FAQ says every image you upload is public and reachable by anyone who has its exact URL. If that is your reason to leave, pick GoFullPage or FireShot, which say they keep captures on your device. Pick Awesome Screenshot for markup and sharing by link. Screenity records video, so pick it only if you want a screen recorder.
Why do people leave Lightshot?
The main reason is on Lightshot's own FAQ: uploaded images get their own public URL, and anyone who knows that exact URL can open the image. The FAQ says this applies with or without an account. Kaspersky has also written that the image URLs are sequential, so changing one character can open another image.
It reported crypto scams built on screenshots in that public gallery. This is not a hack of Lightshot. It is what the Upload step does. Saving to disk or copying to the clipboard does not upload anything. See our Lightshot page.
Lightshot and its alternatives at a glance
| Extension | What it does | Where captures go | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lightshot | Region screenshots | Upload gives a public URL | Quick region grabs |
| GoFullPage | Full-page capture only, no region select | Stored on your device, per the vendor | Whole pages kept local |
| FireShot | Full page, selection or visible area; editor in paid Pro | Local only, per its policy | Full-page capture saved as PDF or image |
| Awesome Screenshot | Capture and markup, plus screencasts | Its cloud, private by default | Markup and sharing by link |
| Screenity | Screen recorder (video), with annotation | Not covered here | Recording, not stills |
What is the best Lightshot alternative that keeps screenshots on my device?
GoFullPage or FireShot. The GoFullPage vendor says screenshots are processed and stored in your browser, not on its servers, and are not uploaded unless you move or share them. FireShot's extension policy says it stores information on your computer only. GoFullPage takes whole pages, not a region, so it fits a different job than Lightshot. See Lightshot vs GoFullPage.
What is the best Lightshot alternative for full-page screenshots?
GoFullPage. It captures the whole page in one go, which Lightshot's region select does not do. Our page lists a shortcut of Alt+Shift+P and saves to PNG, JPEG or PDF. FireShot also captures a full page, plus a selection or the visible area, and saves to PDF, PNG, GIF, JPEG or BMP.
What is the best Lightshot alternative for markup and sharing?
Awesome Screenshot. The vendor says content is private by default in its cloud until you share it, and that shareable links can be revoked at any time. It also records screencasts. It is a share-by-link tool with sign-in through Google or email. These are vendor statements, not our tests.
Can I use Screenity instead of Lightshot?
Only if you want video. Screenity is a screen recorder, not a screenshot tool. It records a tab, an area, the desktop or your camera, with annotation. The project is open source (GPLv3). Its README says some code paths connect to Screenity Pro in the official store build. Pick it for recording, and pick one of the others for stills.
FAQ
Is Lightshot unsafe?
We make no such claim. The fact on record is narrower: if you press Upload, the screenshot gets a public link. If you only save or copy, nothing is uploaded.
Can I delete an upload from Lightshot?
Lightshot's FAQ says you can use the abuse button under the image, email its support, or delete it from your own gallery if you made an account. Check the FAQ for the current steps.
Which one should I pick?
Pick by the job. Whole pages kept local: GoFullPage. Capture saved as PDF or image, local: FireShot. Markup and sharing by link: Awesome Screenshot. Video: Screenity.
