Screenity
An open-source screen recorder for Chrome, with drawing tools and an editor.
Note: Screenity is mainly a video recorder, not a still screenshot tool. For full-page still captures, see GoFullPage and the other picks in our screenshot tools guide.
Why it's a strong pick
Screenity records your screen and lets you mark it up while you record. It is open source, and the Manifest V3 version is under GPLv3. Its latest release came in September 2026. The README says it is free. The same README also promotes a separate paid product, Screenity Pro.
What it does
Screenity is a screen recorder. You can record a tab, an area, the whole desktop, an application or your camera. You can draw, add text, arrows and shapes on screen while you record. Afterwards you can cut, trim and crop in the built-in editor. Alyssa X made it.
Key features
- Many sources. Record a tab, an area, the desktop, an app or the camera.
- Audio. Use the microphone or internal audio, with push to talk.
- On-screen tools. Draw, add text, arrows and shapes.
- Camera options. Camera backgrounds and blur.
- Editor. Cut, trim and crop.
- Export. Save as mp4, gif or webm, or save to Google Drive.
Who it's for
Screenity is for people who make tutorials, demos or feedback videos and do not want a hosted tool. If you only need a still picture of a page, a screenshot extension is a better fit.
What permissions does Screenity ask for?
Its manifest asks for identity, activeTab, storage, unlimitedStorage, downloads, tabs, tabCapture, scripting, system.display and power. Offscreen, desktopCapture, alarms and clipboardWrite are optional. It asks for access to all sites and a Google Drive file scope for saving to Drive. Read the install prompt.
Does Screenity collect my data?
The README says: "Only you can see your videos, we don't collect any of your data." That is the developer's own claim, and we have not tested it. The README also says some internal code paths connect to Screenity Pro, and these are only active in the official Chrome Web Store version.
Is it a screenshot tool?
Not mainly. Screenity records video. It has annotation tools, but its main job is screen recording. For still captures of a page, use a dedicated screenshot extension such as GoFullPage, or compare the others in the screenshot tools guide. Use Screenity when you want a video.
FAQ
Is it free? The README says it is free and needs no sign-in. A separate paid product, Screenity Pro, exists.
What formats can I export? mp4, gif or webm, or save to Google Drive.
Is it open source? Yes. The Manifest V3 version is under GPLv3.
Good to know
The README says the "everything local" claim applies to versions you build yourself. The official store version can reach Screenity Pro features, so do not assume it is fully offline. If privacy matters, read the README section on this before you install.
Other screenshot tools to compare
Screenity is one of our picks in the screenshot tools guide. For still captures, see GoFullPage, FireShot, Awesome Screenshot and Lightshot.
This is a third-party extension, not built or maintained by Xplorekit. We link to the official Chrome Web Store listing — install and permissions are entirely between you and the extension's own publisher.
