How to choose an image tool

Start with the job. Do you need a different file type, or do you need to know what is hidden inside a photo?

  • File type. Simple Image Converter turns WebP and AVIF into PNG or JPEG. It outputs PNG or JPEG only.
  • Just looking. EXIF Metadata Viewer shows a photo's metadata and cannot change it.
  • Looking and removing. Photo EXIF Util shows the data, strips it by category and lets you download a clean copy.
  • Access you grant. EXIF Metadata Viewer lists no site access. The other two ask for access to all sites. Read each install prompt.
  • Project age. Photo EXIF Util is a 0.x project with its latest repo release on 8 May 2026. Expect change.
  • Privacy. Each README makes its own claim: Simple Image Converter says "100% offline, no data collection", EXIF Metadata Viewer says it does not collect personal data, and Photo EXIF Util says its work is all client-side. These are the developers' own statements, not audits. For Simple Image Converter, read the privacy policy its README links.

Why check EXIF metadata before sharing photos?

EXIF is data stored inside a photo file. Per the tools' READMEs, it can include camera make and model, date and time, and GPS location if present. Photo EXIF Util also lists camera serial numbers. Shared as is, that data may go with it. Check first, and strip it if unwanted. We have not tested how any site handles uploads.

Which extension converts WebP to PNG?

Simple Image Converter. Right-click an image and save or copy it as PNG or JPEG. Its README says it was made for WebP and AVIF images that other tools reject. It does not output WebP or AVIF, so it only goes one way.

Which one removes EXIF data from a photo?

Photo EXIF Util. It strips metadata by category and lets you download the cleaned file. It handles JPEG, PNG and WebP. EXIF Metadata Viewer only shows data and cannot remove it, so use it for checking, not cleaning. In short, one tool shows what a photo carries and the other removes it.

Do I need both an EXIF viewer and an EXIF remover?

Not usually. Photo EXIF Util does both. EXIF Metadata Viewer is a smaller, right-click-only choice with a shorter permission list and no site access. Pick it if you only want a quick look and prefer to grant less. Choose the viewer for checking only, and Photo EXIF Util if you also want to clean a photo.

Are these image extensions safe to install?

We can say what each asks for. Simple Image Converter asks for contextMenus, downloads, clipboardWrite, storage, scripting, offscreen and all-sites access. Photo EXIF Util asks for contextMenus, sidePanel, storage and all-sites access. EXIF Metadata Viewer asks for activeTab, contextMenus and scripting. Read each prompt.

Good to know

Keep your original files. Convert or strip a copy, and share the copy. Photo EXIF Util is young, so check its GitHub page for recent updates before you rely on it. Looking for other tools that work on what is on screen? See our screenshot tools and color pickers.
