EXIF Metadata Viewer

A small extension that shows a photo's hidden details with a right-click.

Add to Chrome Chrome Web Store · Source on GitHub

Why it's a strong pick

EXIF Metadata Viewer asks for very little. Its manifest lists activeTab, contextMenus and scripting, and no site access. The code is public on GitHub. It uses Manifest V3, and the repo's latest commit is dated 18 May 2026. That commit was a translation fix, not a new feature.

What it does

Right-click an image and choose "View EXIF Data". The extension then shows the photo's metadata. It is a viewer: it does not remove anything.

Key features

  • Right-click viewer. Choose "View EXIF Data" on an image.
  • Camera details. Make, model, aperture, shutter speed and ISO.
  • Location. Shows GPS location if the photo has it.
  • Date and time. When the photo was taken.
  • Software and artist. Fields stored in the file.
  • No remote code. The EXIF library is bundled in the extension.

Who it's for

It is for anyone who wants to check where and with what a picture was taken, or whether a photo gives away its location. If you also want to remove that data, use Photo EXIF Util.

What permissions does EXIF Metadata Viewer ask for?

Its manifest asks for activeTab, contextMenus and scripting. It lists no host permissions, so it does not ask for access to all sites. That is the shortest list of the three image tools in our guide. Read the install prompt before you add it.

Does EXIF Metadata Viewer collect my data?

Its README says: "We respect your privacy and don't collect any personal data." That is the developer's own statement, not an audit by us. The README does not give more detail, so we cannot say how the extension handles data beyond that line. Read the permissions on its Chrome Web Store listing before you install.

Can it remove EXIF data from a photo?

No. It only shows the data, so it cannot clean a photo. To strip location and device details before you share a photo, use a tool that does that, such as Photo EXIF Util. Use this extension for checking what a photo carries.

FAQ

Does it show GPS location? Yes, if the photo contains GPS data.

Does it work on images from my device? The store listing says it works on images from the web or from your device.

Is it open source? The code is on GitHub. We did not find a licence stated, so we do not name one.

Good to know

A photo with no location data will show none. Many sites strip metadata when you upload, so a downloaded image may show little. Its last commit was a translation fix, so do not expect frequent feature updates.

Other image tools to compare

EXIF Metadata Viewer is one of 3 picks in our image tools guide:

  • Simple Image Converter: Right-click an image and save or copy it as PNG or JPEG. Made for WebP and AVIF. Open source.
  • Photo EXIF Util: See the EXIF data in JPEG, PNG and WebP photos and strip it before you share. Open source. A young 0.x project.

This is a third-party extension, not built or maintained by Xplorekit. We link to the official Chrome Web Store listing — install and permissions are entirely between you and the extension's own publisher.
