Photo EXIF Util
An open-source extension that shows the hidden data in a photo and lets you remove it before you share.
Why it's a strong pick
Photo EXIF Util both shows and removes photo metadata, in one side panel. Many viewers only show it. It is open source under the MIT license, and its code is public on GitHub. It uses Manifest V3. It is a young 0.x project: its latest repo release was on 8 May 2026, and its first releases were that same week.
What it does
It inspects the EXIF metadata of JPEG, PNG and WebP images and strips it by category. It can also resize images for 11 social-media profiles. The README says all of this happens client-side, in your browser. You open it from the toolbar, from a right-click on an image, or with Ctrl+Shift+E (Cmd+Shift+E on Mac).
Key features
- Side panel. Open it from the toolbar, right-click or shortcut.
- Privacy-risk view. Flags items such as GPS and camera serial numbers.
- Strip by category. Remove the metadata you pick, then download the cleaned file.
- Social sizes. Optimise images for 11 social-media profiles.
- Light and dark mode. English and Japanese.
Who it's for
It is for people who share photos online and want to see and remove location and device data first. It suits anyone who wants to check before posting. It is a young project, so expect change.
What permissions does Photo EXIF Util ask for?
Its manifest asks for contextMenus, sidePanel and storage. It also asks for access to all sites, and it needs Chrome 116 or newer. The developer's privacy doc says the site access is used only when you give a URL or right-click an image. Read the install prompt.
Does Photo EXIF Util upload my photos?
Its README says the work is all client-side, which means it happens in your browser. That is the developer's own statement, not an audit by us. We could not confirm more than that here, so read the project's privacy document before you install.
Why check EXIF metadata before sharing photos?
EXIF is data stored inside a photo file. This extension's README lists GPS location and camera serial numbers among the items it can show and remove. If you post a photo as it is, that data may travel with it. Strip it first if you do not want that.
Is it finished software?
Not yet. It is a 0.x project, and its latest repo release was on 8 May 2026, about five months before we checked. That is not a fault, but it means features and screens may change. It works with JPEG, PNG and WebP only.
FAQ
Does it work in every browser? Vivaldi needs a manual Web Panel setup, because it lacks the side panel API.
Can it only view data? No. It can also strip it and download a clean copy.
Is it open source? Yes, under the MIT license.
Good to know
Keep your original photo. Download the cleaned copy and share that one. After you strip a file, open the copy in the panel again to check that the items you wanted gone are gone.
