Why it's on the list

We include Ginger as a familiar name, not as a top pick. It is a simple spelling and grammar checker, and its free plan is limited. We could not verify much beyond Ginger's own help pages, so this page stays short. If you want more detail, compare it with Grammarly or LanguageTool first.

What it does

Ginger notifies you of spelling mistakes and grammar errors in real time, so you can fix them as you type. Ginger's help center says the free plan gives limited grammar corrections, plus definitions, synonyms and rephrasing. Premium adds unlimited corrections, synonyms and rephrasing, and translation into 40+ languages.

Key features

  • Real-time spelling checks. Flags misspelled words as you type.
  • Real-time grammar checks. Flags grammar errors alongside spelling.
  • Free plan. Limited grammar corrections, with definitions, synonyms and rephrasing.
  • Premium plan. Unlimited corrections and rephrasing, plus translation. Check current prices on Ginger's site.

Who it's for

Ginger suits people who already know the brand and want a simple checker. It is not aimed at long reports or heavy style work. If you write in several languages, see LanguageTool, and read our Grammarly alternatives page for a side-by-side view.

Is Ginger free?

Partly. Ginger's help center says the free plan has limited grammar corrections and no translation. Premium removes the limit on corrections and adds translation. We list no prices because Ginger shows changing offers. Check its site for current terms before you pay.

Where does the text I type go?

Grammar checkers read what you type, so your text goes to the vendor. Ginger's terms say content you share, including spelling and grammar error data, is combined for statistics and to improve the software, and is not tied to particular users. That is Ginger's description. Read its privacy policy before you paste sensitive text.

When you are logged in, it stores your personal dictionary and common mistakes.

What permissions does Ginger ask for?

We did not read the permission list from Ginger, so we do not list it. A grammar checker needs to read the text fields you use it in. Check the install prompt in Chrome for the current permissions before you add it.

FAQ

Does Ginger translate text? Ginger's help center says translation is a Premium feature.

Is it as capable as the bigger checkers? We have not tested that and found no source, so we make no claim. Compare it with the other picks in our grammar guide.

Do I need an account? We could not confirm. Check the first-run screen after you install.

Good to know

The free plan limits corrections, so a long draft may not be fully checked. Test it on a real piece of your own writing before you decide. Keep sensitive text out of any grammar checker until you have read its privacy policy.
