Adblock Plus

A long-running ad blocker that uses filter lists, with Acceptable Ads on by default. Free, optional Premium.

Add to Chrome Free, optional Premium · Chrome Web Store

Why it's a strong pick

Adblock Plus has been around since 2006, and its Chrome version runs on Manifest V3. Ad blocking itself is free; the paid Premium plan adds extras but, per Adblock Plus, no extra blocking. The trade-off is that Acceptable Ads is on by default, so some ads still show until you switch it off.

What it does

Adblock Plus blocks ads using filter lists. On Chrome it uses the declarativeNetRequest API from Manifest V3. You can turn lists on and off, and the right-click menu lets you block a single page element.

Key features

  • Filter lists. Choose which lists are on. On Chrome, Adblock Plus's own blog says you can have up to 100 lists installed and 50 on at once.
  • Acceptable Ads setting. On by default. Turn it off from the gear icon, General tab, by clearing "Allow Acceptable Ads".
  • Block an element. Use the context menu to hide one thing on a page.
  • Manifest V3. The first MV3 build was version 4.0, released 30 April 2024.
  • Free blocker, optional Premium. Check the current Premium price on its own site.

Who it's for

Adblock Plus suits people who want a blocker with a long history and who accept Acceptable Ads or will switch it off. It is made by eyeo, which also owns AdBlock. If you want no Acceptable Ads program at all, see uBlock Origin Lite.

Does Adblock Plus block every ad by default?

No. Acceptable Ads is on by default and lets some ads through. To block more, open the gear icon, go to the General tab and clear "Allow Acceptable Ads". Adblock Plus's own blog says eyeo is paid by some larger sites to be allowlisted, so decide for yourself whether that fits you.

What permissions does Adblock Plus ask for?

Its published manifest lists declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess, webRequest, scripting, tabs, webNavigation, storage, unlimitedStorage, contextMenus, notifications and alarms, plus access to all sites. That is a broad list, so check the install prompt in Chrome for the current one before you install. Our safety check goes through each one.

Does Adblock Plus work with Manifest V3?

Yes. The Chrome version uses Manifest V3 and needs Chrome 127 or newer. Under MV3, Chrome limits how many filter lists can run at once, so a long list of custom filters can trigger an error. Our Manifest V3 guide explains what changed.

What does Adblock Plus do with my data?

eyeo publishes a privacy policy at adblockplus.org/privacy. We could not read the developer's privacy policy when we checked; read it before installing. Do not assume the extension sends nothing. Look at what the policy says about usage data and browser details first.
