For most people, uBlock Origin Lite is the best ad blocker extension for Chrome. It is a lighter Manifest V3 extension from uBlock Origin’s developer, it is open source, and it uses uBlock Origin’s default lists. The trade-off is that Manifest V3 limits what it can do, and the developer says so plainly.
If you want a commercial blocker with optional Premium, AdBlock or Adblock Plus are the options, but check the Acceptable Ads setting first.
No. The original uBlock Origin was removed from the Chrome Web Store on 31 August 2026, according to its own README. uBlock Origin Lite is a separate, lighter Manifest V3 extension by the same developer, not an automatic replacement. It uses the same default filter lists but applies them through Chrome’s declarative content-blocking API.
All four ad blockers work with Manifest V3, Chrome’s current extension platform. uBlock Origin Lite runs its filtering rules through the declarativeNetRequest API. AdGuard AdBlocker has been fully MV3 since version 5.0.91 (September 2024). AdBlock has been MV3 since 6.0.0 (23 April 2024), and Adblock Plus since 4.0 (30 April 2024).
Choose uBlock Origin Lite if you want no Acceptable Ads program at all. AdBlock and Adblock Plus both have an Acceptable Ads setting that lets some ads through, and it is on by default in both. Turn it off in the settings if you want more blocked.
No. SponsorBlock is not a classic ad blocker. It skips sponsored segments that creators place inside their own videos, using segments submitted by other users. It does not remove the ads YouTube itself plays, so use it alongside an ad blocker from this list. We could not read its developer’s privacy policy when we checked; read it before installing.
AdGuard AdBlocker is the pick that adds checks for phishing sites. Its privacy notice says the check uses Safe Browsing with hash prefixes. uBlock Origin Lite does not describe a similar check, so compare the two side by side before you choose one, and read each privacy notice before you install.
