AdBlock
An ad blocker made by eyeo, the same company as Adblock Plus. Free, optional Premium.
Why it's a strong pick
AdBlock has a free core, runs on Manifest V3 and shares open-source code with Adblock Plus. It is made by eyeo, the same company as Adblock Plus. Its data sharing is opt-in. The trade-off: Acceptable Ads is on by default, so it does not block every ad out of the box.
What it does
AdBlock blocks ads using filter lists. It has an Acceptable Ads setting, "Allow some non-intrusive ads", which has been in AdBlock since 2012. You can switch it off in the Filter lists tab on Chrome and Edge.
Key features
- Filter lists. Ad blocking works from lists you can manage in the Filter lists tab.
- Acceptable Ads setting. On by default, off in the Filter lists tab.
- Optional Premium. AdBlock's help center lists enhanced YouTube blocking, cookie-banner blocking, Image Swap and a VPN. Check current prices on its site.
- Manifest V3. The first MV3 build was version 6.0.0, released 23 April 2024.
- Open source. The code sits in eyeo's public repository under GPL v3.
Who it's for
AdBlock suits people who want a free blocker with little setup and can live with Acceptable Ads or turn it off. It sits close to Adblock Plus, so read our comparison. If you want a blocker without that program, try uBlock Origin Lite.
Is AdBlock the same as Adblock Plus?
No. They are separate extensions from the same company. eyeo bought AdBlock in April 2021 and the two teams combined, but the products stay separate. Both share open-source code, both work on Manifest V3, and both have an Acceptable Ads setting. Our comparison page sets them side by side.
Does AdBlock collect data?
AdBlock's help center says anonymous filter-list usage data is opt-in and off by default. If you turn it on, it includes filter lists, which rules fired, domain names of sites visited, browser language and site tags. That is AdBlock's description, so read its full policy before you opt in.
What permissions does AdBlock ask for?
Its published manifest lists alarms, contextMenus, declarativeNetRequestWithHostAccess, idle, notifications, scripting, storage, tabs, unlimitedStorage, webNavigation and webRequest, plus access to all sites. That is a broad list, so check the install prompt for the current one before you install, since permissions can change between releases.
Does AdBlock work with Manifest V3?
Yes. Chrome's current extension format is Manifest V3, and AdBlock has used it since version 6.0.0 (23 April 2024). It needs Chrome 127 or newer. Chrome limits how filter rules work under this format. Our Manifest V3 guide explains how filter updates work on MV3.
