Why it's a strong pick

NordPass has a free plan with unlimited passwords, passkeys and personal info, plus autosave and autofill. NordPass says it encrypts data with XChaCha20. The trade-off: the free plan allows one active session on one device. Weak-password checks and breach monitoring are Premium-only, so the free plan is the basic version.

What it does

NordPass makes strong passwords, saves and fills your logins, and stores passkeys, cards and personal notes. Your vault syncs, but on the free plan you can be signed in on only one device at a time. NordPass says data is encrypted on your device and that no one, not even the company, can see what you store.

Key features

  • Autosave and autofill. Included on the free plan.
  • Passkey storage. Both the free and Premium plans store passkeys.
  • XChaCha20 encryption. NordPass says it uses this algorithm.
  • Password Health. Flags weak, old and reused passwords. Premium only.
  • Data Breach Scanner. NordPass describes 24/7 monitoring of emails and cards. Premium only.
  • Password sharing. Listed by NordPass as a Premium feature.

Who it's for

NordPass suits people who want a simple manager and are fine with one active device on the free plan, or who will pay for Premium to use several devices at once. If you switch between a laptop and a phone all day and want a free plan, compare Bitwarden and Proton Pass, which list unlimited devices on their free plans.

Does the NordPass free plan sync across devices?

The free plan syncs, but it allows only one active session on one device. If you sign in on a second device, you are signed out of the first. NordPass says Premium allows unlimited simultaneous devices. Check the current plan details on NordPass's site before you rely on either plan.

What is free and what is Premium?

The free plan covers unlimited passwords, passkeys and personal info, with autosave, autofill and sync on one active device. Premium adds unlimited simultaneous devices, Password Health checks for weak, old and reused passwords, the Data Breach Scanner and password sharing. We list no prices because they change.

What audits and certifications does NordPass mention?

NordPass published a Cure53 audit of NordPass Business: 21 person-days covering mobile, desktop, browser extensions and the admin panel. It reports 15 issues, one rated High, fixed and re-checked. That audit was of the Business product, not the free build. Nord Security also says it holds SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO 27001.

What permissions does NordPass ask for?

Check the install prompt on the Chrome Web Store listing before you add it. A password manager has to read and fill forms on the sites you visit, so expect a broad request. Permissions can change between releases, so read the prompt again after big updates.

Good to know

If you want weak-password checks or breach alerts, that means Premium. On the free plan, remember you are signed in on one device at a time. Turn on two-factor authentication for your NordPass account and keep a recovery option, so a lost device does not lock you out.
