ColorZilla
A color picker, eyedropper and gradient generator with a webpage color analyzer, for Chrome and Firefox.
Why it's a strong pick
ColorZilla puts an eyedropper, a color picker, a gradient generator and a page color analyzer in one extension. It is made by Iosart Labs LLC and has run on Manifest V3 since version 4.1. Its developer states it does not collect any of your data or browsing activity. The trade-off: it asks for access to all websites, and we found no public source code.
What it does
ColorZilla lets you sample a color from any page, copy it, and build CSS gradients. The Webpage Color Analyzer lets you look at the colors of the elements on a page. Sampled or generated colors are copied to your clipboard in CSS RGB, Hex and other formats, and keyboard shortcuts speed up sampling.
It runs on Chrome and has a Firefox version too.
Key features
- Eyedropper and color picker. Sample any color on a page.
- Gradient generator. Build a CSS gradient and copy the code.
- Webpage Color Analyzer. Inspect the colors of page elements.
- Palettes. The vendor's page lists 7 built-in palettes.
- Clipboard copy. CSS RGB, Hex and other formats.
- Keyboard shortcuts. Sample without reaching for the mouse.
Who it's for
ColorZilla suits designers and developers who want several color jobs in one tool: picking, checking a page's colors and making gradients. If you only need a bare eyedropper, ColorPick Eyedropper or Eye Dropper will feel less busy. Our ColorZilla vs ColorPick Eyedropper page compares the first two.
Who makes ColorZilla?
Iosart Labs LLC. The Chrome Web Store lists it as the publisher, and ColorZilla's privacy policy says the extension is owned and managed by iosart labs llc. The company is based in Dover, Delaware, in the US. Our safety check goes through who publishes it and what to verify.
Does ColorZilla work with Manifest V3?
Yes. ColorZilla's version history describes version 4.1 as moving to Chrome's latest extension framework, Manifest V3. We found no later version in that history. We could not confirm when 4.1 reached the store, so check the "Updated" line on the listing for how recent it is.
What does ColorZilla do with my data?
Its developer says it collects none. ColorZilla's Chrome privacy page says: "ColorZilla DOES NOT collect any of your data or your browsing activity on any websites." The store's privacy section says the developer has disclosed that it will not collect or use your data. These are the developer's statements. We found no public source code to check them against.
What permissions does ColorZilla ask for?
At install, Chrome warns that ColorZilla can access your tabs and your data on all websites. A color picker has to read the page you click on to sample a color, on any site. The developer does not publish a full permission list that we could read, so check the install prompt before you click "Add to Chrome".
FAQ
Is ColorZilla open source? Not that we found. No public source code turned up.
Does it need an account? Its official pages do not describe a sign-up step.
Is it on Firefox? Yes, the developer has a Firefox version.
Good to know
ColorZilla can read every page you visit. That is how an eyedropper works, but you are trusting Iosart Labs with that access. Remove it when you stop using it. Also be careful with name lookalikes: other color picker extensions have similar names, so install from the listing we link.
Other color picker tools to compare
ColorZilla is one of 5 picks in our Color Picker Tools guide, which compares them side by side and explains how to choose. The other picks:
- Eye Dropper: A plain color picker for Chrome. Click a color on a page and copy it as HEX, RGB, HSL or HSV.
- ColorPick Eyedropper: A focused eyedropper with a zoomed, draggable magnifier. Open source, and it works without registration.
- Site Palette: Pulls a color palette from a whole web page, then exports it to Figma, Sketch, Adobe Swatch or SVG. Has a trial and paid plans.
- Chromapicker: A free, open-source color picker with palette, mixer and gradient tools.
