NordVPN
A proxy extension that routes your browser traffic through NordVPN. It needs a NordVPN subscription.
Key fact: a browser extension is not a device-wide VPN. NordVPN says its extension secures only your browser traffic, while its app secures all internet traffic.
Why it's a strong pick
NordVPN's extension is a light way to use a NordVPN subscription inside the browser. NordVPN says it needs no admin rights and is lighter than the app. It also bundles browser-level controls such as split tunneling and WebRTC leak prevention. The trade-offs: you need a paid subscription to connect, and anything outside the browser is not covered.
What it does
The extension routes your browser traffic through a NordVPN proxy server. You sign in with your Nord Account. Installing it is free from the Chrome Web Store, but NordVPN says an active subscription is needed to connect.
NordVPN lists Double VPN, obfuscated servers, dedicated IP, NordLynx, Meshnet and Dark Web Monitor as app features, not extension features.
Key features
- Browser split tunneling. Choose which sites skip the proxy.
- WebRTC leak prevention. NordVPN lists it for the extension.
- Scam and phishing protection. NordVPN describes DNS filtering that blocks intrusive ads and malicious domains. That means it can block some ads, but it is not a full ad blocker.
- Location and time-zone spoofing. NordVPN says the extension matches them to the server you pick.
- Browser-level kill switch and auto-connect. Both are listed by NordVPN.
Who it's for
NordVPN suits people who already pay for NordVPN and want a quick way to use it in the browser. It is a poor fit if you need a free VPN, or if you need every app covered. For a free plan, see Proton VPN.
Is the NordVPN extension a full VPN?
No. NordVPN's own support article says the extension secures only your browser traffic. The app secures all internet traffic. Features like Double VPN and Meshnet are in the app, not the extension. If you want device-wide coverage, install the app instead of, or beside, the extension, and read the next answer first.
Can I run the NordVPN app and extension together?
NordVPN says not to run the app and the extension at the same time, because they can interfere with each other. Pick one for a session. Use the app for whole-device coverage, or the extension for a lighter browser-only connection. Check NordVPN's support article if you need to combine them.
Does NordVPN need a subscription?
Yes. NordVPN's help pages say you need an active NordVPN subscription and a Nord Account login to connect. We list no prices, because they change. Check NordVPN's own site for current plans and terms. NordVPN lists Chrome, Edge and Firefox as supported browsers.
What does NordVPN say about logs?
NordVPN says it does not store connection logs. It says its no-logs claim has had six independent assurance engagements, the first two by PwC Switzerland and later ones by Deloitte, with the sixth in 2025. These are NordVPN's statements. We have not tested them, so read its reports before you rely on them.
What permissions does NordVPN ask for?
We could not read the Chrome Web Store permissions for this review, so check the install prompt before you add it. A proxy extension is likely to ask for broad access, so read the prompt carefully. Permissions can change between releases.
FAQ
Who makes NordVPN? NordVPN is part of Nord Security. Surfshark merged into the same group in 2022, per both companies, and still operates as a separate brand. See Surfshark VPN.
Does it block ads? NordVPN's scam and phishing protection uses DNS filtering that also blocks intrusive ads. It is not a dedicated ad blocker.
Good to know
The extension covers the browser only, so other apps keep your normal connection. Do not run the NordVPN app and the extension together. Compare other options in our VPN and Privacy Tools guide, or see best Chrome extensions for privacy. Other VPN extensions: ExpressVPN, Proton VPN.
Other vpn & privacy tools to compare
NordVPN is one of 12 picks in our VPN & Privacy Tools guide, which compares them side by side and explains how to choose. The other picks:
- ExpressVPN: A browser extension with two modes: a browser-only proxy, or a remote for the ExpressVPN desktop app. It needs a subscription.
- Proton VPN: A browser VPN extension from Proton AG, the company behind Proton Mail. It has a free plan and covers browser traffic only.
- Surfshark VPN: A lightweight Surfshark extension that protects browser traffic and adds ad, tracker and breach-alert tools. The 7-day trial needs payment details first.
- Privacy Badger: A tracker blocker from the EFF that learns which third parties track you as you browse.
- Ghostery: An open-source tracker and ad blocker that also removes cookie pop-ups and shows tracker info for each site.
- DuckDuckGo Search & Tracker Protection: Tracker blocking and HTTPS upgrades from DuckDuckGo. It also makes DuckDuckGo your default search engine.
- I Still Don't Care About Cookies: An open-source community fork that removes cookie banners on most sites. It hides or accepts them. It does not reject them.
- ZeroOmega: Open-source proxy switcher for proxies you supply. Not a VPN: it provides no servers.
- FoxyProxy: Open-source proxy switcher with per-site rules for proxies you supply. Not a VPN: it provides no servers.
- JShelter: Browser privacy hardening: limits what sites can read from your browser APIs and helps against fingerprinting. Not a VPN and does not hide your IP address. Open source.
- NoScript: An open-source script blocker that stops JavaScript, embedded objects and media until you allow a site.
