How to choose a distraction blocker

Start with one question: do you want to stay off a site completely, or keep using it without the parts that hook you? The five picks here cover both, and one works on search results instead.

  • Block whole sites or trim them. LeechBlock NG blocks a site outright. RYS and News Feed Eradicator leave the site open but remove the feed. Fokuser blocks the sites on your list while its focus timer runs.
  • Schedules and time limits. LeechBlock NG blocks by time, by day or after a set amount of time. RYS offers scheduling only as a premium setting. Fokuser is one timer and one list, not a schedule.
  • Which sites. LeechBlock NG works on any site you list. RYS works on YouTube only. News Feed Eradicator targets social media feeds. uBlacklist works on search engine results pages.
  • How hard it is to switch off. LeechBlock NG has lockdown mode, password protection and a countdown before you can reach a blocked site. That helps when willpower runs out.
  • Privacy. All five are open source, so anyone can read the code. LeechBlock NG and the free features of RYS need no sign-in, and Fokuser’s README says its data stays on your device. We could not read the developer privacy policy for uBlacklist or Fokuser when we checked; read it before installing.

If you work in timed blocks, pair a blocker with a focus timer. Our productivity timers guide compares five Pomodoro-style timers, including Pomofocus, whose store listing mentions a website blocker.

Which is the best website blocker extension for Chrome?

LeechBlock NG is the strongest all-round pick. You can set up to 30 block sets, each with its own sites, times and days. It can block on a schedule or after a time limit, and lockdown mode and password protection make it hard to undo in a weak moment. It is open source under MPL-2.0.

How do I block YouTube recommendations but keep YouTube?

Use RYS: Remove YouTube Suggestions. It hides the homepage feed, sidebar recommendations and end-of-video suggestions, so search and the video you opened still work. It can also hide Shorts or send them to the normal video player, and hide comments. The core features are free and need no account.

How do I stop scrolling social media feeds without deleting my account?

Install News Feed Eradicator. It removes the news feed on social sites and shows a quote where the feed was. You can still use the parts you need, such as messages and pages. If you would rather not open a site at all during work hours, block it with LeechBlock NG instead.

How do I hide certain websites from Google search results?

Use uBlacklist. You add the sites you are tired of seeing, and it hides them from results on Google, Bing, Brave, DuckDuckGo and other supported search engines. It only hides them from results, so the sites still open if you type the address. To keep yourself off a site, use LeechBlock NG as well.

Is there a simple focus timer that blocks sites?

Fokuser. Set a focus timer and blocklisted sites stay closed until it ends. It has a whitelist, a fullscreen focus mode and time-saved tracking, and the README says no account. It is open source under Apache-2.0. It is a very new, small project running a content script on every page, so do not rely on it for strict control.

Should I use a distraction blocker or a focus timer?

Use both if you can. They do different jobs. A blocker removes the temptation, and a timer gives your work a steady rhythm. LeechBlock NG covers blocking on a schedule or after a time limit, and a Pomodoro timer such as Marinara covers the work-and-break cycle. See our productivity timers guide for timer picks.

Are these distraction blockers private?

All five are open source, so their code is public. LeechBlock NG and the free features of RYS work without signing in. RYS asks you to sign in only for its optional premium settings. Read the permissions on each Chrome Web Store listing before you install. We could not read the privacy policy for uBlacklist or Fokuser; read it first.
